      Oakland, California | Maria Schoettler is an Oakland-based artist and illustrator who has been known to paint pictures of her food before she eats it. Several years back, after making her weekly pilgrimage to her neighborhood farmer's market, Maria got inspired to make a fun-to-look-at guide of what fruits and veggies were in season each month. From this, grew her annual tradition of creating of an Eat Local Calendar which eventually bloomed into a California Native Plants Calendar, featuring plants that are in their prime according to month.

      Since she was a kid, Maria draws and paints for one of two reasons: because she wants to or because she has to. Fruits, flowers and people are her specialty. She thinks painting is just plain fun! Her interests include documenting and reciting old adages, whoopie pies, adventures and running uphill.
